Heritage Town of Roscrea

In the centre of Roscrea is the beautifully restored King John's Castle, dating to c.1280. In the grounds of the castle is the equally imposing Damer House, a Queen Anne style mansion dating from the early 18th century. Roscrea has a monastic history stretching back over 800 years. The Round Tower and beautiful Hiberno-Romasesque doorway are all that remain of a 12th century Augustinian Abbey, where you can trace the heritage of Roscrea in the Blackmills Heritage Centre.

On the outskirts of Roscrea is the equalyy important monastic settlement of Monaincha, a place of pilgrimage for people all over Ireland for many centuries. Here you can see one the earliest High Crosses in Ireland. Also in the town are the remains of a 14th century Franciscian Friary. The monastic tradition is continued today by the Cistercians at Mt. St. Joseph's Abbey. Click here for more details.
